What does Field Trip do?
Basecamp only sends notifications via email. If you're using Slack or Google Chat you probably don't focus as much on email as you used to. Field Trip shares your Basecamp activity in Slack so your team can stay informed and move to Basecamp when it's time to get to work.
Does Field Trip support Basecamp 1, 2, and 3?
This is a great question, because no, we don't. Here's a handy chart to help:
Basecamp Classic: Not now, probably not ever. The Basecamp Classic API is really hard to work with. So hard.
Basecamp 2: Yup! We didn't always support Basecamp 2, but we do now! So many people requested Basecamp 2 that adding it was a no brainer.
Basecamp 3: Yup! This is where we started. A great API. A simple interface. The Basecamp version our team currently loves and uses every single day.

Why do I need more Basecamp notifications?
Our team uses Slack and Basecamp everyday. The more we use Slack, the less we use email, so we noticed we were frequently missing Basecamp notifications when work was complete or when our team members asked us questions. It wasn't ideal and it was hurting our workflow. We really love Basecamp, so instead of trying to find a different solution, we decided to build Field Trip and start sharing our Basecamp activity in Slack!
We immediately noticed a big improvement in how we worked with Basecamp and how responsive our team was. A surprising benefit was how Field Trip let us scan a message in Slack when work was done in Basecamp and reply when we were ready. We didn't have the urgency to drop what we were doing because email notifications were coming in and we weren't sending @mention messages to each other to review Basecamp posts. Field Trip lets us work more efficiently and with more focus.

Do I still get email notifications?
You sure do! We didn't change anything about the way Basecamp works. We just added some Slack power on top. Basecamp is a tool and Field Trip is the cherry on top!
What Basecamp functions does Field Trip send to Slack and Google Chat?
We thought long and hard about this one, because there's a lot to do in Basecamp. We wanted to make sure that the work you and your team do is shared but we didn't want to overwhelm everyone with notifications. So we decided to share these Basecamp activities in Slack and Google Chat:
- New message board posts
- New comments on message board posts
- New to-dos
- New comments on to-dos
- Completing a to-do
- New automatic check-ins

Basecamp does not display moved files in your Basecamp Latest Activity feed, so we don't send a notification. For copied files, we've chosen to not send a notification to reduce noise. If you think copied files should be sent to Slack, let us know!
Does Field Trip read and store my Slack messages and Basecamp posts?
Nope. We get enough of our own messages, we don't want yours too!
Why can't I enable Field Trip with client access to a Basecamp project?
Basecamp created client access to improve communication between project teams and their partners. The client account has no administration or ownership access to Basecamp projects so Field Trip has to respect this level of access.
If you've got client access and you want to enable Field Trip you'll need to work with the project team that owns the Basecamp account.
Who on my team can make changes in Field Trip?
Anyone with Basecamp credentials on your team can log into Field Trip and make changes.

Slack and Basecamp are widely popular business tools. Basecamp was launched in 2004 while Slack was launched in 2013. Both apps have millions of users and function for businesses of all sizes from large corporate companies to small freelance businesses.
As a freelancer, you may be wondering which tool is better for your business to streamline communication and efficiency. Or perhaps there’s an alternative? That’s where Indy comes in. Basecamp Overview
In a video on their website, Basecamp describes the app as “one organized place for your projects, teams, and company-wide communication.” Essentially it is a collective project management tool that aims to help improve work visibility, organization, and communication.
The main dashboard is broken into three sections. The company HQ - a section for company-wide updates and communication, teams - individual departments and teams, and projects - all ongoing company projects.
Within a project, all information related to that project is stored from start to finish. There are a variety of communication tools, schedules, and to-do lists to make sure all team members know their tasks and responsibilities. The goal is to have everything housed in one place, so people can work efficiently without having to jump across multiple platforms or sift through multiple email chains. With complete project visibility, there is also less room for miscommunication or misunderstandings about project expectations or details.
Though the platform was built for companies with multiple employees in mind, Basecamp can be used by individual business owners to manage projects and client communication.
Freelance web designer Leah Kalamakis explains in her blog why she loves Basecamp “Many of these features are similar in all project management software. But you will find differences in how easy they are to understand and use for both you and the client. I find the ease-of-use for the client is the most important part.”
Slack Overview
Slack is a tool that often gets compared with Basecamp. Unlike traditional project management software, Slack is primarily a communication tool.
Slack is a real-time messaging, discussion, and file-sharing app. Its goal is to make work less complex and more efficient by eliminating the need for email and disorganized file-sharing systems.
Slack is organized by workspaces and channels. Your workspace is where your company communication is housed. Channels can then be organized by projects, teams, or whatever is relevant for the business. Messages are then saved and searchable. You can also respond to single messages by creating a thread on a single topic or question.
Other notable slack features are voice and video conferencing, shared channels - which allow you to connect with people outside of your business, and a workflow automation tool.
Like Basecamp, Slack was also built for companies with multiple employees in mind, but it’s also useful for freelancers who are looking to streamline their client communication.
Slack itself isn’t optimized to be a project management tool, but it has over 2000 integrations, so if you are already using another project management tool like Trello, Asana, or Jira you can easily integrate it to Slack. That way you can have your projects and communication in one place.
Slack, like social media platforms, also offers helpful communities for freelancers - where freelancers can connect, network, and ask questions.
According to a comparison by StackShare Slack has “broader approval” and is more often recommended by developers because of easy integration.
Is Basecamp or Slack better?
There is no clear cut answer. Both tools help keep business communication in a centralized place. Both also replace the need for relying on email, which can be disorganized or inefficient.
Basecamp may be a better choice if project management is your primary concern while communication is secondary.

Slack may be better if streamlining communication is your main goal. Considering the number of integrations Slack offers, if you’re already invested in a different project management tool, slack likely can easily integrate.
